A Road Favorite in October Is Worth a Look
Minnesota United has not won a match in five tries. St. Louis CITY SC has lost none of five. And yet the number separating them at Allianz Field is about the width of a hair. The visitors are +150, the hosts are +165, and the draw sits at +290. Home field in MLS is usually worth real money. Here, the market has quietly handed it back.
The Matchup
Form is the hard evidence on the table, and it is lopsided. Minnesota's last five read draw, draw, loss, loss, loss. That is two points from fifteen, with the two draws being the recent improvement rather than the problem. St. Louis reads draw, win, win, win, win. Four straight wins before a split of the points in the most recent outing. Late in an MLS season, results like those carry weight for both the standings and the mood in the room. We are not going to invent a table position we were not handed, but we do not need one to see the gap in the last month of evidence.
How Soccer Betting Works
Soccer uses a three-way moneyline. A moneyline is simply a bet on who wins, and "three-way" means there are three results to buy: Minnesota, St. Louis, or the draw (tie). This is the part that burns American bettors coming over from football and basketball. If the match ends 1-1, the Minnesota ticket loses and the St. Louis ticket loses. Both of them. Only the +290 draw ticket cashes. There is no overtime to save you. The result is graded on 90 minutes plus stoppage time. So when you back a side, you are not fading one outcome, you are fading two.
The Numbers
Minnesota United to win is +165, best at Hard Rock Bet, meaning a $100 bet returns $165 in profit. The draw is +290, best at FanDuel, so $100 returns $290. St. Louis to win is +150, best at BetMGM, so $100 returns $150. Total goals is set at 3.5, with Over +118 and Under -152 both best at Bally Bet (that -152 means you risk $152 to win $100). Notice the 3.5 line. Most soccer totals sit at 2.5, so a 3.5 line with the Under only at -152 says the books expect goals here, not a grind.
Now the shopping math. Those three best prices imply 37.7%, 25.6%, and 40.0%, which add to 103.3%. That extra 3.3% is the house edge, and it is tiny by soccer standards only because we took the best of each market from three different books. Take all three at one app and that number balloons.
Where the Value Is
Strip out the house edge and the fair prices are Minnesota 36%, draw 25%, St. Louis 39%. A +150 ticket needs to win 40% of the time just to break even. So at face value, +150 is not a gift, it is roughly the honest number. Our edge has to come from disagreeing with that 39%. We do.
Five matches without a win for the hosts against four wins in five for the visitors is a bigger separation than a one-cent gap in price. Call St. Louis 45% and the math moves: $100 at +150 returns $67.50 of expected profit against $55 of expected loss, or about $12.50 of expected value per $100 risked. That is what expected value means. Not what happens Saturday, but what the bet is worth on average if you make it a thousand times.
Conditions
Allianz Field in Saint Paul, a genuinely loud building, and that crowd is already baked into Minnesota's +165. We were not given a weather report, so we are not guessing at one. Mid-October in Minnesota is a real variable, and if a forecast lands before kickoff, it belongs in the Under 3.5 conversation.
The Pick
St. Louis CITY SC to win at +150 at BetMGM. The price is the entire bet. Break-even at +150 is 40%, at +135 it jumps to 42.6%, and at that point the edge is gone. If your book has CITY shorter than +140, pass and move on.

The Prediction
St. Louis has been the better team for a month and Minnesota has not found a winning formula in five attempts. The 3.5 total hints at an open match, which favors the side playing with confidence. We project St. Louis CITY SC 2, Minnesota United 1. That is the Desk's read on this number, and if you want to see how we document a play from start to finish, the free daily play sits right below.

Can you bet on a draw in MLS?
Yes. Soccer's standard bet is the three-way moneyline: home win, away win, or draw in 90 minutes. The draw is a real, often valuable outcome, and a draw makes both win bets lose, which is the biggest adjustment for bettors coming from American sports.
