How totals work
The book posts a number, say 47.5 points, priced around -110 on each side. Bet the over if you expect a combined 48 or more, the under if you expect 47 or fewer. Who wins is irrelevant; only the combined score matters. A half-point line removes the chance of a push, while a whole number can tie and refund the bet.
A worked example
A game total is 47.5. The teams combine for 27-24, which is 51 points, so the over cashes. If they combine for 20-24, that is 44, and the under cashes. Weather, pace, injuries to key scorers and defensive matchups move totals more than most bettors expect, especially in football and baseball.
Reading total movement
Totals move on weather reports, lineup news and betting pressure. The public loves overs because rooting for points is more fun, which can inflate over prices and leave value on the under. As always, the split between where the tickets are and where the money is tells you whether the crowd or the sharps are driving the number.

Does who wins matter for an over/under?

What happens if the total lands exactly on the line?
If the line is a whole number and the score matches it, the bet is a push and your stake is refunded. Half-point lines cannot push.
