Guaranteed sports picks and locks: what those words really mean

No sports pick is a lock and no service can promise a guaranteed pick. The best long-run professional records sit near 55 percent, and a standard -110 bet needs 52.4 percent just to break even. Judge a handicapper by plays posted before the game and graded in public, not by the word guaranteed.

  1. Translate the word. When a service says lock or guaranteed pick, read it as a bet the seller feels strongly about. That is all it can mean. Every game has two priced sides, and the price already contains the market's confidence. If a side were certain, no book would post a number on it.
  2. Ask for the record before the outcome. A real record is posted before kickoff, with the price, and graded afterward in public, losses included. Screenshots after the game prove nothing. If the seller cannot show the plays as they were posted, treat the record as marketing.
  3. Check the math against the price. At -110 you need to win 52.4 percent of your bets to break even. A documented 55 percent over thousands of plays is elite. Anyone claiming 70 or 80 percent over a season is either counting a tiny sample or not counting the losses.
  4. Compare the pick with the market. Run the posted price through the betting odds calculator and the no-vig calculator, then look at the betting splits. If the public money and tickets are already piled on the so-called lock, you are paying a shaded price for a side the crowd found first.
  5. Size for variance, never for certainty. Even a 55 percent bettor loses 45 times in 100 and hits cold runs of five or six. Bet a fixed unit of one to two percent of your bankroll on every play. A bettor who doubles up on a lock is the one a losing streak takes out.

Why no pick can be a lock

A sportsbook line is a price, and prices move because informed money disagrees about the outcome. A game that were truly decided would have no market. The professionals who beat this game over years do it by winning a little more often than the break-even rate and by taking better prices than the crowd, not by finding certainty. Six straight winning years at a 55 percent clip is the shape of a great record. It also means roughly nine losses in every twenty plays. Any pitch that skips that second half is selling the word, not the work.

What a documented record actually looks like

Every play written down before the game starts, with the line and the price. Every result graded afterward where anyone can read it, losses included, no deleted weeks, no reset seasons. A running career total that a stranger could recompute. That is the standard we hold ourselves to on the documented record, and the method is written out on how we grade. If a service you are considering cannot show the same thing, the record is a story.

Reading a pick the right way

Take the side the seller likes and treat it as a hypothesis. Convert the price with the betting odds calculator, remove the book's margin with the no-vig calculator, and check the betting splits to see whether the public has already moved the number. A pick that still clears those three checks is worth one unit. A pick that fails them is worth zero, no matter what it was called in the sales copy.

Frequently asked questions

Are guaranteed sports picks real?

No. Every game is priced by a market that already reflects the available information. A service can be good, meaning it beats the break-even rate over a large documented sample, but no service can remove the loss side of a bet.

What does a lock mean in sports betting?

Slang for a pick the bettor feels very confident about. It carries no information about the actual probability. Treat it as an opinion and check the price, the record and the splits before you act on it.

What win rate should I expect from a legitimate handicapper?

Long-run professional records sit between 53 and 57 percent against the spread. Anything far above that over a full season is a small sample or a record that leaves out the losses.

How do I check a handicapper's record?

Look for plays posted before the games with the price, graded afterward in public with losses included, and a career total you could recompute yourself. Our record and grading method are public at /records and /how-we-grade.
