About this board

Quick answer
To convert American odds to decimal, add 1 to the profit per $1 risked. For a plus number, decimal = 1 + odds / 100. For a minus number, decimal = 1 + 100 / the odds without the sign. So +150 is 2.50 and -110 is 1.91.
Written by the Wise Guy Desk, reviewed by Ross Thornton.

Betting odds state the price of a wager in one of three formats: American (-110), decimal (1.91) and fractional (10/11). All three encode the same payout and the same implied probability, where implied probability = 100 / decimal odds, so -110 implies 52.38%. This converter flips any format into the others instantly.

How the odds converter works

Odds come in three common formats and they all describe the same thing. American odds show how much you win on a $100 bet at a plus price, or how much you must risk to win $100 at a minus price. Decimal odds show the total return for each unit staked, stake included. Fractional odds show profit over stake.

Enter a price in any format and the converter shows the other two, plus the implied probability, which is the chance the price represents before the bookmaker's margin is removed. Converting helps when books or countries use different formats, and implied probability is the fastest way to compare two prices: the lower the implied chance for the same outcome, the better the price for you.

How betting odds work

Betting odds tell you two things: how much a bet pays and the chance the book is giving it. The same odds can be written three ways. American odds use plus and minus (a -110 favorite, a +150 underdog). Decimal odds show the total return per $1 staked (1.91). Fractional odds show profit to stake (10/11). They are the same number in different clothes, and this converter turns any one into the others instantly, then shows your payout.

What do + and - mean in betting odds?

A minus number like -110 is the favorite: it is how much you must stake to win $100. A plus number like +150 is the underdog: it is how much you win on a $100 stake. The bigger the minus, the bigger the favorite. The bigger the plus, the bigger the underdog and the payout.

How to read and convert odds

  • American to decimal: for a plus price, decimal = 1 + (odds / 100). For a minus price, decimal = 1 + (100 / odds).
  • Decimal to American: if decimal is 2.00 or higher, American = (decimal - 1) x 100. If lower, American = -100 / (decimal - 1).
  • Fractional to decimal: decimal = 1 + (numerator / denominator). 10/11 = 1.91.
  • Implied probability: implied % = 100 / decimal odds. So -110 implies about 52.4%.
Worked example. Take -150. Decimal = 1 + (100 / 150) = 1.67. Fractional = 100/150, which reduces to 2/3. Implied probability = 100 / 1.6667 = 60%. Going the other way, a 5/2 underdog is 1 + (5 / 2) = 3.50 in decimal, +250 in American, and 100 / 3.50 = 28.57% implied.

Odds conversion chart: American, decimal, fractional and implied probability

This conversion chart covers the prices you will actually see on a board, from heavy favorites to long shots. Every row is the same price written four ways. Implied probability includes the book's vig, so the two sides of a real market will total more than 100%.

Every fractional value shown is the exact equivalent of the American price. Decimal is rounded to two places.

What is implied probability?

Implied probability is the win rate the odds price in, which is also your break-even rate. At -110 you need to win about 52.4% just to break even. Here is the catch: a book's two sides add up to more than 100%, and that extra is the vig (their margin). So the true no-vig fair probability is lower than the implied number. Finding bets where your real chance beats the implied price is the entire edge, and it is what our line shopping and +EV tools do automatically.

The Wise Guy Team way

Convert to whatever format you think in, but never bet a number without checking it against the field. The best price across regulated US books, and the no-vig fair line behind it, is where the money is.

Frequently asked questions

How do betting odds work?

Odds show both the payout and the implied chance of a bet. American odds use plus and minus, decimal odds show return per $1, and fractional odds show profit to stake. They all describe the same price.

What do + and - mean in betting odds?

Minus is the favorite (stake that much to win $100); plus is the underdog (win that much on a $100 stake).

How do you convert American odds to decimal?

For a plus price, decimal = 1 + odds/100. For a minus price, decimal = 1 + 100/odds. Example: -110 becomes 1.91, +150 becomes 2.50.

What is implied probability?

It is the win rate the odds price in and your break-even rate. Implied % = 100 / decimal odds, so -110 implies about 52.4%.

How do you calculate payout from odds?

Multiply your stake by the decimal odds for the total payout, then subtract the stake for profit. This tool does it as you type.

Which odds format is best?

They are identical in value, so use whatever you read fastest. Sharp bettors often use decimal because it makes comparing prices and computing payouts easy.

How to use the odds converter

  1. Pick the format you have: American (+150, -200), decimal (2.50) or fractional (3/2).
  2. Type the number. The other formats and the implied probability update together.
  3. Read the implied probability first. It is the break-even win rate at that price, and it is the number that lets you compare two books fairly.
  4. Compare it with your own estimate of the chance the bet wins. If your number is higher, the price has value; if lower, pass.

Worked example: three formats, one price

+150 means a $100.00 bet wins $150.00. In decimal that is 2.50, and the implied probability is 40.0%.

-200 means you risk $200.00 to win $100.00. In decimal that is 1.50, and the implied probability is 66.7%.

The numbers above are an illustration of the math, not a prediction or a result.

Common questions

How do I convert American odds to decimal?

For plus odds, divide by 100 and add 1. For minus odds, divide 100 by the odds (ignore the minus sign) and add 1.

What is implied probability?

The win rate you need at a given price just to break even. Divide 100 by the decimal odds, or use the converter.

Why do two books show different odds for the same game?

Each book sets its own margin and reacts to its own money. That gap is why line shopping matters.
