The Wise Guy Desk graded 30 MLB player props across 12 games today, all in two markets: Total Bases and Strikeouts. Most props on any given day are priced fairly or worse, and the job is finding the small handful where a sportsbook's number pays more than it should. How Player Props Work

A player prop is an over/under wager on one player's statistic in one game. The book posts a number, say a pitcher's strikeouts at 6.5, and you bet whether the real total lands over or under it. Attached to each side is a price, like -115, which tells you the cost. At -115 you risk 115 to win 100. Built into that price is the vig, the sportsbook's fee, which is why both sides of a fair coin flip usually cost more than even money. A bet is +EV, meaning positive expected value, when the price you get pays more than the true probability says it should. If a strikeout over really hits 55 percent of the time and a book prices it like it hits 50 percent, that gap is your edge. Betting only when that gap exists is the entire strategy.

Why the Best Number Wins

Here is what makes props different from game lines: the prices vary enormously from book to book. The same Total Bases over might sit at -125 at one sportsbook and -105 at another, and sometimes the number itself differs, 1.5 at one shop and 2.5 down the street. Game spreads are sharpened by huge betting volume, but props get less attention from books, so slow or lazy numbers survive longer. Over hundreds of bets, the difference between always taking -125 and always taking -105 is the difference between losing money and winning it. Line shopping, meaning checking multiple books before you bet, matters more in props than anywhere else in the market.

How We Find +EV

Our method is simple to describe and strict to run. For every prop, we pull prices from at least three major US sportsbooks and strip out the vig to build a no-vig consensus, our best estimate of the true odds the market implies. Then we compare the single best available price against that consensus. If the best number beats the fair price by enough to clear our value bar, the prop qualifies. If it falls short, it gets cut, no matter how appealing the matchup looks on TV. Today that filter took 30 candidates down to 4. Discipline is the edge. Most props fail the test, and passing on them is what protects your bankroll.
