How Player Props Work

A player prop is an over/under bet on one player's stat line in a single game. A book posts a number, say 5.5 strikeouts for a starting pitcher, and you bet whether the player finishes over or under it. Both sides typically carry a price around -110, which means risking 110 to win 100. That extra ten dollars is the vig, the book's built-in fee. Because of the vig, you need to win more than half your bets just to break even. A bet is +EV, or positive expected value, when the price you get pays more than the true probability justifies. If a strikeout over truly hits 55 percent of the time and you can bet it at a price that only requires 50 percent, you hold a real mathematical edge. That gap between price and truth is the entire game.

Why the Best Number Wins

Here is the trait that separates props from mainstream markets: prop prices vary dramatically from book to book. The same total bases over might sit at -125 at one sportsbook and -105 at another, and sometimes the line itself differs by a half point. Books have fewer resources devoted to props than to game lines, so stale and soft numbers appear daily. Taking -105 instead of -125 on the identical bet does not feel like much in one wager, but across a season it is the difference between a losing bettor and a winning one. Line shopping, comparing prices across multiple books before betting, matters more in props than anywhere else in the sport.

How We Find +EV

Our method is deliberately simple to describe. For every prop on the board, we pull prices from at least three major US sportsbooks and strip out the vig to build a no-vig consensus, which is the market's collective best estimate of the true probability. Then we compare the single best available price against that consensus. If the best number beats the fair price by enough to clear our value bar, the prop qualifies as +EV and gets ranked. Today that filter reduced 30 candidates to 5. We are not predicting baseball better than the market. We are exploiting the fact that one book's price is often out of step with everyone else's.
