How to line shop for the best odds

Line shopping means comparing the same bet across multiple sportsbooks and betting it at the best available price. Because every book prices independently, a better number or a key half-point is free value on every bet, and it is the simplest, lowest-risk edge any bettor can build.

  1. Hold accounts at several books. You cannot shop with one book. Two or three regulated books is enough to almost always find a better number.
  2. Compare the exact bet. Line up the same market, side and number at each book before you bet.
  3. Value the half-point. On football and basketball, a half-point around key numbers (3 and 7 in football) is worth real money. Take the better side of the number.
  4. Take the best price, every time. Whether it is a better spread or a few cents less juice, always bet where the number is best. It compounds over a season.

What line shopping is worth

Say Book A has your team -3 (-110) and Book B has -2.5 (-110). Betting -2.5 means a 3-point win pushes instead of losing, which on the most common football margin is a large edge for the same price. Or Book A is -110 and Book B is -105 on the same total, so B lowers the vig you pay. Neither requires handicapping a single game; you just take the better number. Our line shopping tool lines up prices so the best one is obvious.

Why it beats picking winners

Improving your average price by even a few cents of juice per bet can swing a break-even bettor to a profitable one, because it directly reduces the house edge on every play. Prediction is hard and streaky; shopping the number is easy and repeatable, which is why every long-term winner does it.

Frequently asked questions

Is line shopping worth the effort?

Yes. Consistently getting a better number lowers the vig you pay on every bet, which can flip a break-even bettor into a profitable one without handicapping a single extra game.

How many sportsbooks do I need?

Two or three regulated books is enough to nearly always find a better price on your side of a bet.
