What Does Cover the Spread Mean? | WGT

What does cover mean in betting?

To cover means a bet beats the point spread, not just the scoreboard. A favorite covers by winning by more than the spread, and an underdog covers by losing by less than the spread or winning outright. A team can win the game but fail to cover.

Covering as a favorite

A favorite at -6.5 covers only by winning by seven or more. Win by six and they won the game but did not cover, so spread bettors on them lose. This is why a team can be a great real-world team and a poor bet: covering large spreads week after week is much harder than simply winning.

Covering as an underdog

An underdog at +6.5 covers by losing by six or fewer, or by winning the game outright. Underdog bettors are rooting for the team to keep it close, not necessarily to win. "Backdoor cover" describes a late, seemingly meaningless score that flips the spread result, a classic swing in football and basketball.

Why covering matters

The spread, not the final score, decides these bets, so covering is the only outcome that pays. Getting the best number is what tips close games from a loss to a push or a push to a win. Over a season, half-points around key margins decide a meaningful share of spread bets.

Frequently asked questions

Can a team win but not cover?

Yes. If a favorite wins by less than the spread, they win the game but fail to cover, and spread bets on them lose.

What is a backdoor cover?

A late score that changes the spread result even though it does not affect who wins, often frustrating bettors on the other side.
